Mother of the Mountain//
She stands like a mountain, A mother protects; a mother endures. Through joy and grief, storm and sun, local women’s experiences of motherhood are here brought together with the wind-blown heights of the Cheviots. "Mother of the Mountain looks for the often unseen strength demanded of mothers, reflecting on the stories of the women of the North East. Motherhood is testing and tiring, rewarding and heartbreaking. The responsibility of providing for and determining what is best for children is at times overwhelming, and tests women’s sense of self as their children assume a position of singular importance in their lives. The landscape of Northumberland is similarly challenging, untamed and vast - and, like motherhood, depends on having a frame of reference by which to navigate its boundlessness. By using only the audio of mothers’ voices alongside the silent heights of the Cheviot Hills, the film creates a space of attention which proposes a loose but constant relationship between lived experience and landscape." -Tyneside Cinema |
